Traditionally, New Year’s resolutions focus on self-improvement – hitting the gym, eating healthier, learning a new skill. But why not apply this spirit of growth to something you love, like wine? After all, there’s always room to deepen your appreciation for this complex and fascinating beverage.
Explore New Wines
The new year is an opportunity to break free from your comfort zones! In addition to a Chardonnay, try a crisp Riesling, a sparkling Chardonnay, or a Rosé.
Stretch yourself beyond Zinfandel and explore lesser-known varietals such as Counoise or Tempranillo. With 50 varietals grown in El Dorado, there’s no reason not to challenge your palate.
Don’t be afraid to experiment! Sample natural wines, explore biodynamic and organic wines, or try a fortified wine like a Ruby Port.
Visiting wineries or joining a wine club can be a fun and informative way to discover new favorites.
Embrace “Less is More”
We’re not fans of extremes, so instead of Dry January, consider quality over quantity. Enjoying a glass of wine with dinner or sharing a bottle with friends over appetizers can heighten the wine experience while creating memories.
Moderation allows you to enjoy a single glass of wine mindfully, savoring the moment and appreciating the science and artistry that went into its creation.
Embrace Your Inner Autodidact Oenophile
(AKA Learn About Wine)
Sure, wine is fun to drink, but did you know that the stories behind the varietals and wines you love can be both entertaining and informative?
There are plenty of opportunities to learn, ranging from videos to books to in-person. Why not:
- Visit a local winery and chat with the winemaker or owner
- Subscribe to wine newsletters
- Follow wine experts or sommeliers on social media
- Read wine books, magazines or articles
- Listen to a wine podcast
Support Local Wineries
Full disclosure: This is our favorite resolution. The El Dorado AVA is home to a dizzying array of boutique wineries growing wine grapes and making high quality wines in the high-altitude Sierra Foothills.
There are numerous ways to explore and experience them. Our favorites, in no particular order –
- Visit local wineries for tastings and tours
- Join a wine club (or a few!)
- Buy wines directly from the wineries
- Attend local events – like El Dorado Passport, held every spring
- Sign up for winery newsletters (like ours, found here)
Supporting local winemakers helps to sustain our vibrant wine industry and lets you connect with the people who craft the wines you love.
