Another year, another Father’s Day. Stumped again on what to get dad, or any of your favorite father figures? Not to worry—even if you only have a few days left.

My advice is to ditch the neck tie, cordless drill, foam slippers, monogrammed golf balls, and heck, even that favorite bottle of Scotch. What?! Serious, this year treat him to—drum roll, please—wine tasting!

Wine tasting is a great way to introduce someone who has even just a hint of interest, including average dads like me, to the “behind the scenes” action. He can meet the vintners, get a first-hand perspective on how wine is produced, and take in some impressive scenery while sipping tasty wine.

Beyond sampling various wines, he can purchase a bottle or two to take home and enjoy later (Hint: include as a bonus gift!). And for those who want to splurge a bit more or go in on a group gift, you can even schedule a wine tasting tour with a professional driver, allowing dad to enjoy without worry. There are so many more ways to enjoy the excursion, whether it’s bringing a picnic lunch along, adding a local restaurant to the trip, or staying overnight at a quaint bed and breakfast. The point is to create a unique, relaxing, and memorable experience. He deserves it.

Sold on the idea? Well, you’re in the right place. Northern California offers some of the most scenic, award-winning, and friendly wineries—many within a short drive. Several even offer Father’s Day specials and activities, so check before you go. And if it’s too short notice to coordinate for this Sunday, create a hand-made certificate for a future date of his choosing.

Now, will someone please share this with my kids and wife?
