Fall is one of my favorite times of the year! The travels of summer have subsided, the kids are settling back in school, football is in full swing, and I start planning our annual trip to Apple Hill.

If you’re familiar with El Dorado County, then you probably know about this treasure situated in the Sierra Nevada foothills, just northeast of Placerville off Highway 50. But just in case you don’t know, here are the Cliff Notes: There are more than 50 farms and ranches full of fruits (notably apples – hence the name “Apple Hill”) and other produce; there are wineries and breweries; and there are tons of outdoor activities and shops – making Apple Hill a premier, family-friendly destination for a day trip or weekend getaway, particularly this time of year.

But some still don’t realize that there are wineries in Apple Hill producing many of the best, high-quality, award-winning wines! Combine great wine with breathtaking country scenery, easy access, an array of picnicking and food options, and year-round mild weather, these wineries beckon general visitors and wine enthusiasts alike. In addition to tastings, pairings, and winemaker “meet-and-greets,” many of these wineries also offer seasonal activities, events, and live music!

So if you’re looking for something to do, with friends, family, or as a couple, take a drive up to Apple Hill. It won’t disappoint. Especially if, after enjoying a piece of fresh apple pie or picking out that perfect pumpkin, you stop by one or several of the nearby wineries.
